I always put the new items out in the shop for trying out in a lower lag environment than the events. The texture menus are off at events so if you want to see the colors in person check out the in-store displays.
A few people have asked me lately if it is ok to test the furniture fully. The sim is adult (unlike many sales venues) so it is ok if you test thoroughly. As long as you are not doing anything to bother other shoppers, like running naked on the stairs and bumping into people and other such dumbassery. I hide many goodies into my items so unless you test you may miss them. It is a good idea to have a look at the info notecards which you can get by clicking on the framed picture of the item.
